   SUMMARY:

The presenters will discuss their research on the concept that
job-analysis questionnaires can be converted into "Occupational
Judgment
Tests (OJTs)" in order to measure knowledge and expertise that is
usually acquired through professional experience across a wide array
of
occupations. Because of the historical success of job analysis
questionnaires and the related expectation that respondents with
technical expertise are required to obtain valid job-analysis ratings
data, the authors hypothesized that individual differences in
expertise
can be efficiently measured by converting job-analysis questionnaires
into judgment tests. As an initial test of this hypothesis,
Occupational
Judgment Tests (OJTs) were derived from job-analysis questionnaires,
and
job incumbents were asked to objectively rate the frequency of job
tasks
and the importance of employee attributes to occupational
performance.
The presenters will discuss the results of their research on the OJT
approach and how it may be used in place of standard techniques
(e.g.,
objective work samples and knowledge tests) for many applications and
at
   greatly reduced cost.

   ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

Dr. Pete Legree has been a Research Psychologist at the U.S. Army
Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences since 1986.
His research has focused on the development of judgment tests to
measure
aptitudes in poorly-specified knowledge domains and the creation of
consensually-derived scoring standards to assess performance on those
   judgment scales.

Dr. Joseph Psotka is a Program Manager for basic and applied research
in
behavioral and social sciences at the Army Research Institute. He
earned
a Ph.D. degree in cognitive psychology from Yale University in 1975.
Dr.
Psotka joined the U.S. Army Research Institute in 1982 as a team
chief
within the Training Laboratory, where he has remained.

Tiffany Bludau is a doctoral student in the Industrial/Organizational
Psychology program at George Mason University. Her research interests
include diversity in the workplace, personnel selection, and
occupational health psychology. Tiffany works part-time at Fannie Mae
as
a Human Resources consultant and also serves as a Consortium Fellow
at
   the U.S. Army Research Institute.
