Archana M. Tedone, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Industrial and Organizational Psychology Division of Applied Behavioral Sciences University of Baltimore Office: LC 410
Ibi Layi-Ojo, an alumna of our IOP program, would like to share this opportunity with you all.
“I am looking to hire an Exams Administrator on my team at CFP Board. Could you please share the information with any interested students? https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/3107222668/ “
I think this could be a great opportunity for students in their 2nd year to recently graduated.
Sorry for a second email, but just some clarification since the job posting doesn't say this:
They are looking for someone with good quantitative skills who can assist with working on various data sets as part of a Center at the School of Medicine. They are looking for someone interested in Occupational Health to help with their research. The posting might seem like they are expecting extremely advanced quantitative skills-but I spoke to someone about the posting, and students who have had stats/methods with me and especially multivariate should definitely be qualified. Let me know if you have further questions!
My apologies for any confusion this posting created. The person who passed this information along was giving us a heads up about a position that would be coming out soon. Below is the link to apply for the job for anyone who is interested. If you have any questions about the position, please contact Teresa Yates ([log in to unmask]).
Thank you to those who replied to my survey, appreciate the input. Based on the majority, we will be having the UB IO networking event at the Union Brewery https://unioncraftbrewing.com/taproom/ in Hampden on Saturday August 13th at 1pm!
I am trying to invite all alumni, current students, and incoming first years to attend this event so please extend this invitation to anyone who is an alum or student who may not know about it.
My friend from Univ. of Gent, Dr. Małgorzata Kozusznik, shared an exciting opportunity for a PhD fellowship. Please share with aspiring scholars the information about the vacancy (https://www.ugent.be/en/work/scientific/doctoral-fellow-12).

The past two weeks I have spent a majority of my time helping with updating and assessing the various projects that the Social Security Administration oversees. I have edited old program summaries to reflect the current status and progress that the program has made. I have also analyzed survey data that programs had gathered and summarized the conclusions. I have written reports on the effectiveness of the programs and offered my suggestions on what could be implemented for improvement. I also made some edits to the actual surveys that were being distributed to ensure that the most accurate information possible
Brynee' Dade This week we focused on completing the draft of the Job Analysis and submitted the section typed for review. Also, during this week, I learned the meaning behind a “frozen” PIN which means that the position that has been frozen can not be used for comparison for future studies or can not subject to be filled by potential candidates until the PIN or position has be classed appropriately. Typically, PINs that are frozen are of priority, thus these PINs are expected to be placed within their appropriate class before PINs that aren’t frozen. While working through my first
Brynee' Dade Began writing report from interview with incumbent by checking and updating MS-22 (position description). I also learned the salary schedule for the State of Maryland, which consists of grades from 5 to 26 with each grade has 20 steps within one grade. Non competitive promotion (NCP) allows incumbents to move up a grade each year. In other cases where incumbents want to move up a step, the incumbent must meet satisfactory performance and their supervisor must recommend it. However, step increases aren’t guaranteed but are based on fiscal budget and state revenue such as cola (cost of living
My internship is with the Office of Management and Budget in DC. I had heard that the security clearance process with the government was slow but I did not think it would take over 4 weeks, I was finally able to start Thursday of last week!
My first few days were spent figuring out logistics with my badge/computer, then meeting and talking with everyone on my floor about what they do at OMB. I was also given tours of the New Executive Office Building and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Brynee' Dade A request came in to reclassify a PIN from Child Support Specialist Supervisor to Human Services Specialist IV. Obviously, the two class series are different so the question needed to be answered was whether or not the incumbent was performing duties related to Child Support Specialist series or Human Services Specialist series. By working with two HR Analysts I learned the Child Support Specialist series is concerned with establishing and enforcing child support payments to guardian, locating delinquent parents, and identifying paternity. The Human Service Specialist series perform compliance statistical analyses, view operational trends, makes policies and recommendations.
The week consisted of going through the Maryland Manual Online and identifying the State Agencies from which the reclassification requests come from. There are 23 counties within the State of Maryland. There are 20 departments and 62 agencies. The major four departments called the “Big Four” are the Department of Public Safety, Department of Health, Department of Human Services, and Department of Transportation. In addition to the structure of the State's departments, I learned about the composition of a study memorandum. Depending on the position the job analysis can include background down previously on that particular PIN such as a
Brynee' Dade During this week of the internship, I received my organization’s email address and login for Workday to access information on the State’s employees. Workday is a human capital management software used by the State of Maryland to list, track, and update the pin numbers (job position number) of each the employees of the state. I learned how the jobs within the State of Maryland are divided into different classifications such as Accounting or Human Services. Where each job has different levels associated with it including:
I currently work in Organizational Development and our team is in the process of implementing a performance management (PM) system with identified groups throughout the organization. Our proposed PM system is based on research conducted by Deloitte which found that the majority of managers end up rating their own intentions and not the employees’ skills or performance. As a result, Deloitte came up with four items that drive organizational performance, while also helping organizations identify (and keep) high performers. Those items measure: overall performance and unique value to the organization, ability to work
Brynee' Dade Week 2 The division in which I am interning in is the Classification and Salary (CAS) division. CAS is responsible for the reclassification of positions submitted by incumbents or agencies on the incumbents’ behalf. If agencies believe an employee isn’t in the correct classification a request will be sent to CAS for review of the position. The HR Analysts determine whether the incumbent is performing the duties associated with the classification. CAS uses four distinctive methods to analyze under review. These methods include:
Brynee' Dade Week 1 My internship is within the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Office of Personnel Services and Benefits, Classification and Salary Division. I started my internship experience off by meeting with a representative from Human Resource to complete the documents for onboarding such as 1-9 form and ID card. I also went over the expectations of the intern position with the Deputy Direction, which included working at least 10 hours per week and not to exceed late June.

Since my initial post, I have been reading Ten Day MBA by Steven Silbiger. This book was recommended to me by Dr. Mitchell, who said that it would help understand how businesses operate. I have also been doing separate research on industrial psychology and how it can be related to marketing and influence customers to buy specific products. I was semi nervous about finding research that is related to what I am doing, but so far, I haven't had much trouble.
I understand that I am supposed to post bi-weekly updates regarding my practicum, so here is the first one.
I have been working for a local chocolatier for about five years now. It is a very small business (currently only myself and the owner), which isn't doing so well financially. The owner is looking to expand, so she has hired me to help with that. Until this past January, I was a manager and I would recruit, hire, and train all new employees (for our busy season). I would also supervise employees' daily activities and organize inventory and

I've had more luck this week getting the Food Service Managers to participate in the C-JAM JA. I had to use a combination of methods to collect data such as surveys, interviews, and observation. However, I've hit a road block. Some of the SMEs rated that they never perform certain tasks, and I was therefore unable to collect task criticality and task difficulty ratings from them. How can I compute task importance if I am missing these ratings from some of the SMEs? My sample size is 8, and for some tasks I am missing 2-3 SME inputs
For my practicum project, I am doing a job analysis (C-JAM) for Food Service Managers. There are only 9 available for me to interview plus their 2 supervisors. I managed to do three interviews this week, however I am having trouble getting the SMEs to sign up for the interview. Many of them keep avoiding it and I am not sure why. Does anyone have advice on how to get the SMEs to participate?

There has been steady movement at Keswick regarding this semester's practicum. I was able to create new hire "welcome" videos for the any candidates that accept the job offer. Eleven different hiring managers were videotaped. We did this to create a welcoming feeling for the candidates. By seeing a face and personally being welcomed to the organization, they will feel a sense of belonging which will hopefully help with turnover.
Things are wrapping up nicely at my practicum site. The holidays have provided me less updates but things are now reaching its conclusion. We have confirmed that 6 positions will be consolidated into similar roles. The managers of these positions have returned their feedback and we have put together preliminary job descriptions for the job codes that will remain. A few of our positions have been pushed to the 2016 year (beyond my time with the organization) due to the need for more time and information before an educated decision can be made. We have begun communicating our
I have continued my work at Keswick by working on their on-boarding process. So far the subject matter experts that I have been trying ot meet with have been difficult to get ahold of. Their input is needed for me to create the orientation powerpoint as well as appoint mentors for when the new hires begin.
Things are starting to reach its conclusion at my internship but there is still much work to be done! We have finished conducting the majority of our interviews for our 2015 priority list of job description consolidations/reviews. While most of the decisions to consolidate have already been made, we are still waiting for feedback from a few of the managers in each department. We want to make sure that they have enough time to review and make any additional changes to the job description before we pass along the changes to HR. In addition, we are still compiling

Things are progressing well at my practicum site. We are still waiting on final responses from managers before the next steps are taken in the job code consolidation process. The managers we previously spoke to are still doing final checks on the job descriptions in their departments. Once they have determined that the job descriptions are in a suitable manner, we will begin preparing a report for HR as to which job descriptions can be deleted from their database and which ones should be updated with new information.
My main focus the past few weeks has been identifying key positions and completing a job analysis on each of these positions. The job analysis will be an important factor in performance reviews, identifying training needs and compensation decisions.
With such a short time frame, I knew from that start that it would be unrealistic to successfully and thoroughly conduct a job analysis on each position within the entire company, and still accomplish what I set out to do. As previously stated, the goal of my practicum is to improve employee engagement and motivation while increasing individual and organizational performance.
Progress has been steady on the practicum here at Keswick. I have been meeting with supervisors and directors to go over what they would like to be mentioned in the orientation. They all agree that orientation should be tweaked and that we should focus more on the individual instead of the organization. Too much focus on the organization makes the candidate feel as though they are not an integral part of the company. This is something we need to change to improve the culture.
I hope you all had a great week. Things have been progressing nicely at my internship. We began meeting with managers to discuss consolidations for similar job titles (and their job codes) in their respective departments. They agreed with the decision and we will look to make the title changes by the end of the year. Before eliminating any titles or job codes, we have asked the managers to do their own review of the job description. It must be decided whether or not a new job description should be written or if it is fine as currently
I have been working on my practicum with my current employer, Marlin Steel. While this is my first post, I have been working on this for a few weeks so I will be posting several more updates over the course of the next few days.
Marlin Steel is an American manufacturing company that faces intense competition and rapidly changing market requirements. The sustainability and success of Marlin Steel is directly correlated to an agile business-strategy that emphasizes continuous improvement and human capital. Things proceed well at my practicum site. We are still conducting interviews and evaluating candidates for 2 senior-level positions: a Q/A Analyst and a Business Analyst. We are also developing a job description and selection protocol for an entry-level position in the marketing department. This week I met with the hiring manager and 2 incumbents to gather information about the job as well as the kind of person they are looking for. It looks like the selection procedure will involve a personality test and a standardized

The past two weeks have been a continuation of the work I touched on in my first update. Meetings were held to further the development of a new position that requires a brand new skill set. Things are going well but future meetings are being planned to justify the need for this new position to individuals such as the CIO.
A couple of weeks ago I started my practicum at the Canton Group, a small IT firm based in Baltimore. In my time there I will:
1) I will be part of the full cycle of the hiring process: I will help to create job description, I will use those descriptions as a guideline to select valuable candidates; I will contact candidates for exploratory interviews; I will interview candidates with other hiring managers. The interviews will be structured and work samples will be administered.
I have recently begun my 2nd practicum at Keswick Multicare Center in Baltimore MD. If you can remember, in the Spring I completed a practicum here where I developed a behavioral descriptive interview training program for the hiring managers. I instructed them how to effectively interview and select candidates. I also was involved with the research and implementation of the Wonderlic test which Keswick now uses as a pre-hire assessment.

Hope everyone is enjoying summer break so far, this is my second update from EMD sales in Baltimore and the direction of my project as changed. Originally, I was to conduct an engagement survey, instead I am working on a job analysis project. EMD sales is split into two sections (literally two buildings!) 1. The warehouse sorts and delivers product to various destinations 2. The sales department coordinates with various vendors throughout the metropolitan area
As is oftentimes the case when undertaking a large project for management, those (in this case myself) with hands on get a better feel for the processes involved on both a macro and micro level than does management who oversees the project. Management was under the impression that the questionnaire I created to screen patients would contribute drastically to reducing wait-time for patients to receive services, when in actuality the questionnaire will only help expedite one small portion of the overall process (as well as provide families with an alternative that could be more preferable, less costly than paying employees
Hello all, my name is Gelila Mesfin and I am in my first year of the I/O program, this summer I am working at EMD sales- an international food supplier located in Baltimore, MD. Although I am assisting in multiple areas of human resources my focus will be conducting an engagement survey, or updating and/or creating job descriptions for several positions. If I proceed with the survey I think my biggest obstacle here will be ensuring translation-retranslation since a majority of the employees are Spanish speaking. The ultimate goal is to present management with my findings on the current level
This summer I am completing a practicum at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Thus far, I have met with management and continued the planning process for the project they have asked me to complete. I have created an online questionnaire using Qualtrics that screens patients in or out of our program, and from there it screens patients into one of two services. Following the completion of the questionnaire, patients (their families) are asked to complete a feedback survey so I can find out about their experience. I have sent the questionnaire to 65 families and have 22 responses as of this

Some interview questions such as "How you you handle a difficult manager?" is

We will tackle a series of important questions, sharing stories and insights from experts and attendees along the way. It just might be the most fun session you attend this year!
As several of you know, the global business arena is requiring more attention from IO Psychology professionals. It's not enough that managers to understand global commerce, but so must we, as IO practitioners, be prepared to provide professional services that would enhance the quality of people's work lives around the globe and in intercultural interactions.

I need to get an estimate of the number who are interested.

I have finished my PowerPoint on Behavioral Descriptive Interviewing and am getting ready within the next few weeks to present it to the nursing hiring managers. Today I will go over the presentation with the Director of HR to see if she would like for me to make any changes to it. We are looking to have about 2 1 hour-1 1/2 hour sessions with the hiring managers.
I'm Fresia Jackson, a current graduate student at UB.
This is a reminder that the SIOP conference is coming up April 23-25 in Philadelphia <http://www.siop.org/conferences/philly.aspx>. The conference changes coasts every year, with 2016 being in Anaheim, CA. Therefore, if you were planning to go next year, don't put it off! The SIOP conference is an amazing opportunity to meet peers in our field, stay up to date with research, network with potential employers and attend student workshops. Additionally, I will be planning an event for UB students and alumni.
Recently at Keswick we have been very hectic. We have been mass hiring nurses to fill vacant positions. The interviews have been done through a job fair that has been held at the facility. This has not given me the chance to implement my interview training yet.
As of now, I have gotten the go ahead to begin the Behavioral Descriptive Interview traning presentation for the nursing hiring managers. My presentation will be broken up into 2 sessions. The first session will be informational and the second session will be more about putting the ideas into practice.
Please save the date on your calendars: 3 internationally renowned scholars/practitioners coming to UB:

Prof. Barbara Kozusznik, univ of Silesia, Poland, president-elect division 1 (organizational psychology) of IAAP and vice-rector of univ and dean of cross-cultural management
Just as the work force changes, plans on the practicum change.
Because of the need for scheduling interviews for nurses, we have abandoned the use of the Pegged Assessment test. Now our focus is on the need for effective behavioral interview questions/training. Using resources on behavioral descriptive interviewing, Myself and the HR department at the multi-care center will develop a training program for hiring managers when it comes to selecting nurses and GNAs (Geriatric Nursing Assistants).
Thank you for the responses to my last post. All the input was greatly appreciated. On Tuesday afternoon I hand delivered a print out of the individual emails to the employees' supervisors. They informed me today that they handed them out to the employees. I have got some more cooperation but I am still looking for more. We will see how many I get by next week.
The first phase of my practicum will be a validation study. The aspect of the hiring process at Keswick Multi Care that needs validation is a Pegged Assessment. Pegged is a software system that assesses employee's cultural and behavioral background to see if they are a proper fit to work here. All applicants are supposed to take this assessment to be considered for hire. However, multiple applicants since May have not taken the assessment but have been hired by Keswick.
My name Is Ben Crenca and I am a first year graduate student in the Industrial/Organizational Program. Currently, I have received a position as a Human Resources Intern at Keswick Multicare Center in Baltimore. Part of my internship will include improving selection, training development, and performance appraisals at Keswick.
This will be done by analyzing current hiring processes and developing/implementing an interviewing process based on behavioral specific interviewing for Nursing positions (nursing assistants to be exact). After that, the implemented training/interviewing processes will be presented to the managers so that we at Keswick can put the new hiring practices to

I just wanted to pass along a very interesting anecdote from my experience at T. Rowe Price this summer in the Organization Development group. As I've mentioned in this forum before, I'm working very closely with a large consulting firm on the HR element of a project that involves transitioning a business unit from TRP into the control of another firm. (Think of it as the HR/cultural piece of an M&A deal, although that is not the language they are using.) Nonetheless, many elements of our study in I/O are present. Of note though
As part of an ongoing project I'm doing this summer in the OD Department at T. Rowe Price, I've been asked to build-out our "organizational assessment" process. What we're really after is a sequence we can put on paper and tools which we can utilize for each of the various stages. I'm curious if anyone on this list has any ideas as to a starting point? I'm not looking for anything too detailed-a diagnostic survey would be helpful, as would a sequential model of process. Thanks very much.

It's very interesting but not logical/user friendly. If I didn't write down what the coding meant I would easily confuse which code save each type of data.

Following this email there will be 5 jobs notices available at ICF international. Different levels, all involving survey research. This is a very good consulting firm.
Please check them out to see if you qualify/are interested, and be sure to reference Art Paddock on your application.
Art Paddock, our alum is working there and asked me to forward them to the list.
